23
April 12 – May 24, 2009
The 23rd Psalm is one of the most recognizable passages in scripture. Unfortunately, most of the time we hear it in a time of grief, sorrow or even death, as at a funeral. However, these words from King David are not just about dying, but rather about living; living life to the full because of the care, love and commitment that comes from our Good Shepherd. We invite you to join us as we explore the depth and richness of this wonderful passage.
Easter Sunday April 12 - 23
We live in an increasingly complex and stress-filled world, don’t we? Financial crisis, lack of world peace, a culture seemingly out of control and so much more is making life complicated and difficult at best. What does our future hold? Is there hope for a better tomorrow? Yes, there is hope; not in a leader or in government or a portfolio. No, our hope is in Jesus, the resurrected Christ. David wrote about Him in Psalm 23: the Good Shepherd. This Easter Day let us celebrate the reason for our hope and begin the journey of "23."

Most of us living in suburban Chicago have little knowledge of being a shepherd. King David, who wrote this Psalm did, before he became King of Israel he was in fact a shepherd. Thus, he knew full well of the care and commitment that a shepherd had toward his sheep. Because of his love and care the sheep had total trust in him. What about you? Who is your shepherd? Who, or what, are you putting your trust in? This message will explore the possibilities of life-change if we will give control of our lives to Jesus, the Good Shepherd.

Sheep, by nature are full of fear and anxiety; mainly because they are so helpless and defenseless. That is why they are completely dependent upon their shepherd. As much as we like to think that we are self-sufficient, the reality is that we are far from it. Jesus is the answer to our fears and the source for refreshment as we journey through this life.

As human beings, we are each broken and sin-filled; it is part of the human experience. There is only one source for total restoration: Jesus, our shepherd. If we will submit to Him and His plan for our lives, He will restore us and put us back on the path to healing and righteousness.

Life is filled with mountain-top and valley experiences alike; obviously, we would all prefer the mountain! But as David wrote this verse, he fully realized that we only get to the mountain-top by passing through the valleys. It is in these times of difficulty and despair that God again and again shows His faithfulness and trustworthiness.

The journey of life can be difficult and dangerous and, many times, lonely. Jesus knows this all too well, as He was here on this earth, for 33 years. When He left, He sent the Holy Spirit to be with us, to lead and guide and comfort. His power within us makes the journey not only possible, but pleasing and exciting as well.

God is good! We are in the care of the Good Shepherd who will never leave us or forsake us! These are the sentiments from David as He closes His tome. Do we feel the same way? Are we rejoicing in the Lord? If so, we have the opportunity to leave a legacy of “goodness and love” as well. As Christians, we must take this opportunity seriously so that others may come to know the Good Shepherd and his love and care as we do.
